What Does Acura Mean?

Three 2020 Acura TLX models on the road

Every brand has origins, but only some have a truly compelling story to tell. Acura belongs to the latter category, and we think you’ll agree once you learn more about the real Acura meaning! As it turns out, the Acura name itself holds the key to a lot of interesting history. If you’re a Spring driver curious about new or used Acura vehicles, read on for a closer look into the Acura name meaning, origin, and insignia.

Inside the Acura Name

“Acu” is a Latin word root that translates to “sharp,” “done with precision,” or “mechanically precise.” Medieval English adapted it to create describe concepts related to keen thought and effective action, resulting in words like acuity, acumen, and accurate. Acura was originally a division of the Japanese Honda Automotive Company, which produced a model equivalent to the Acura called the Akira — which translates to “intelligence,” “wisdom,” and “truth.” It’s easy to see that from the beginning, Acura has operated with core principles of smart design and efficiency, which the company is proud to follow today.

For More Meaning, Look to the Logo

You may have assumed the Acura insignia is an “A” for Acura. That isn’t wrong — but there’s more. The Acura insignia also represents a compass or set of calipers. Both are tools used by designers and architects as they draw up plans for buildings, machines, and vehicles. A compass can be used to draw a perfect circle or arch of any size around a center point. Calipers are used to take small, precise measurements of the thickness between two surfaces. Once again, Acura’s founding principles of good design are at the core.

Acura in History

Acura was born in 1986 when dedicated Honda engineers created the Integra and Legend models. After less than a year of production, the Acura luxury brand went straight to the top.

Early notable models include the Acura NSX supercar in 1989 and the Acura MDX, the first-ever crossover SUV with 3-row seating, in 2000. Acura’s Performance Manufacturing Center is located in Ohio — and shows no sign of slowing down on its development of the industry’s most advanced tech!
