If you’re shopping for a luxury vehicle, there’s a good chance you’ve looked at the new or Certified Pre-Owned Acura lineup. Are you wondering who makes Acura cars, or are you questioning, “Does Honda make Acura?” The answer is yes: Honda makes Acura vehicles. Read on to learn more about who owns Acura, its history, and answer the popular question, “where is Acura made?”

Who Owns Acura? Does Honda Make Acura?

There are a lot of Acura models on the road from Katy to Spring. Many drivers find themselves wondering, who makes Acura cars? Does Honda make Acura vehicles? Indeed, Honda Motor Company is the parent company that owns the Acura brand, and Acura’s background is very much part of Honda’s. What’s the brand history of Acura? Let’s dive into the details.

History of Acura and Honda

In 1981, a luxury-level Honda sedan was in its early planning stages. Rather than simply introduce the new sedan as part of the Honda lineup, Honda executives thought it would be wise to create a separate brand — a new division that caters to drivers with luxury tastes. “Acura” was announced in the year 1984, and just two years later, 60 Acura dealerships officially opened. Within the first year of the luxury brand’s launch, Acura sold over 50,000 vehicles and opened the doors to 150 Acura dealerships. That is how so many Acura models came to be on Sugarland roads today.

Simply put, Acura was a major success — so much so that brands like Toyota and Nissan introduced their own luxury brands as well. Acura continues to grow and expand with models like the Acura NSX, which was the first car in the 1990s to be made using aluminum material. Today, Acura remains a driving force in the luxury vehicle segment and has several concept cars and future vehicles in the works that aim to reshape automotive technology at large.

Where is Acura Made?

So, where is Acura made? Most of the Acura models, including the ILX, TLX, RDX, and MDX, are made in North America. Acura has roots throughout Ohio in particular. The Marysville plant has the largest production capacity of the four locations in the state of Ohio. There are also plants in East Liberty, Anna, and Russells Point, Ohio.

  • The Marysville plant manufactures the Acura ILX and Acura TLX luxury cars. (Marysville is also where you can find the Acura performance manufacturing center, and this is where the Acura NSX supercar is produced.)
  • The East Liberty plant manufactures the popular Acura RDX and Acura MDX luxury SUVs.
  • The Anna plant makes the powerful engines and drivetrain components.
  • The Russel Point plant makes transmissions and related components, including the popular four-wheel drive systems.
