How Often Should You Change Your Tires?

Row of tires

Even the most experienced Houston drivers occasionally admit confusion when answering the question: “How often should you change your tires?”. That’s reasonable – there are a lot of factors at play. The experts at John Eagle Acura created a guide to address the following concerns we often hear:

  • How often should you change your tires?
  • How often should you replace your tires?
  • How often to get new tires/How often do you need new tires?

How Often Should You Replace Your Tires?

Knowing how often to get new tires involves plenty of factors, but a pretty common factor is tire tread depth. Spring roads can wear down your treads. Here how to check:

  • Most state regulations suggest 2/32 of an inch is the lowest you can go on tire tread depth
  • Buy a tire tread tool and inspect your tires before and after long trips!
  • In a pinch apply the penny test. Put a penny, head-side down, into your tread. Honest Abe’s head should disappear. If he’s visible, it’s time to contact a service center. See, pennies are entirely irrelevant!

How Road Conditions Affect Tires

Are you taking your truck outside of Spring in the winter? Are you driving in an extremely rainy area? Consider the following factors:

  • Snow and rain can wear down tire tread depth. Time isn’t the only factor, so pay attention to this!
  • A parts department can help you get more ideal tire treads with options such as all-season tires.

If you’re taking your vehicle on less-than-perfect road conditions, or if it’s been a particularly rainy winter, keep an eye on your tires. Tire rotation according to an owner’s manual or an expert will vastly improve things here, adding less stress to your drivetrain and putting pressure on other parts of your tire.

How Tires Age Over Time

While driving history and road conditions are vital factors in the life of your tire, there is a simple way to check tire age. If you’ve been driving on Sugarland roads for a few years, simply:

  • Look for a four-digit number on your tire, the first two digits tell you the week, the second two the year, your tire was made. This is the date your tire was manufactured.
  • If you are approaching five years in tire age, you may not need new tires, but you should definitely check your tread depth or consult experts at a service center.
